Game Design - Failure and Success Analysis.

I'm not bashing my countrymen, but... If you compare Anito: defend the Land Enraged and Mount&Blade . Critic and Users Score Respectively: 5.6/6.4 vs 7.4/8.8. It is not just a difference of technology. If you look at the premise of Anito and some of the psychology and stories behind its starting and compare it to Mount and Blade, there is a world of difference and so many similarities. Both are their own country's strongest mark in the Computer Game industry, they both draw from their own "history" or the past for inspiration, and placed themselves in positions of great financial risk. The key difference that I see is in the level of commitment to the Vision. Anito has a throw away plot, it didn't even take the time to get any of the key Philippine "pre-history" points (not just the details) right. It was trying to bet on the previous success of Diablo. This to me is a heart-breaking revelation and reflection. Take Amargan and Ipek Yavuz strategy an...

Classic Corruption

In any other developed Country, this would be so suspect that a case would have been right after this interview (if they didn't detect it earlier). Highlights - 2002 5 million assets, 2005 75 million assets. How did you get so rich so quickly? By the way, the Office of the Ombudsman is in the Pocket of the President. The Ombudsman is supposed to be a separate body charged in preventing corruption in the government. All any player needs to do is keep one in the pocket. Actually one can actually have a civil SUIT against the Ombudsman. The country doesnt resove things BY THE LAW, it is by Popular Opinion. Anyone with a powerful enough machine can take control of the Ombudsman's office and hold it over the president's head. The surprise is that None of the TAIPANS are doing this? It is the knife by which to hold the president throat too and to have a cronie in that position is not that hard. Let who ever politician win, just have the business community OWN the Ombudsman. The g...

Things to Consider when Voting

I've heard of the Platform of Gibo (Teodoro) but Promises are just air. When reading into your politicians, consider their motives more than their promises. Look at the consistency of their actions over their vows to change. Have you every changed much of your life? Ask yourself how much you have change and how much you have stayed the same. Its hard to change certain aspects of our life. So we look to the consistency of our candidates for the best clues if there is credibility to their claim. In respects with motives- all candiates have one motive in mind (power). Promises are great, but silence and consistency is better. I like that Villar didn't say quite exactly he was going to pursue or protect the Arroyos. Lets not even put that in the table, because I'd rather tackle it when we get there. Having not promised or acted in a way commitedly protective of the Ruling Administration is an awesome bit of statesmanship. Its close to being honest but without sabotaging one...

Why I will certainly not vote for Teodoro

He is the Arroyos Standard Bearer, If you want justice then you will certainly not get it with this loyal Dog of the Arroyos. His wife, a congress woman (and former beauty queen) is a ChaCha thrall, which emphasizes how loyal this guy is. Yeah, he maybe "smarter" and better qualified than Noynoy but between the two Noynoy actually is starting to grow bigger balls then Teodoro. Noynoy is actually facing off the Catholic Church, who was quick to sell him and was just as quick to attack him after Noynoy's RHB support. I guess the thing about being where he is, Noynoy only owes 2 people for his position: and they are both dead. Still I'm unchanged in my decision. I'd rather Villar run, there is a better chance of him serving the Arroys on a silver platter for the public to distract from his own inconsitencies and to sate the lust for justice of the people. Since the RHB is an overwhelmingly popular Bill the Church's horns are showing Padre . Playing political gam...

Why I'm learning to Fight

I like guns. But I never have (and never will) own one. I think it's just too dangerous to have one around the house, even with a lot of care. We're only human after all. I used to play airsoft. I had the MP5, M4A1, and the P90... :) - Harmless Harmless, its people like you who should own guns. That's the irony about them if you've heard the two cases of accidental gun death in the country months ago. Its the people who understand and are constantly aware of how much they are a responsibility who deserve the right to own one. In my understanding of the history of how meritocracies evolved, it was the freemen class's main defining characteristic was their right to bear arms. Comparing the history of France and England it was typical case study of how the critical mass of armed citizens were able to shift the balance of power towards meritocracies since power shifted from the elites towards the greater masses. In Game Theory, its like an exercise in equilibrium. ...

Philippine Historians' Dilemma: What is Philippine Culture?

Bourdaine's episode in No Reservations about the Philippines quite adequately describes the reality of the culture. Culture is described by, quite simply, "how we do things" (and all the existential iterations of the idea). Philippine culture is highly stratified by its economic classes, regions and the way different cultures (western, Chinese, and Muslim) affects each of these classes. You can even say we are the Asian equivalent of America, where you have the largest variety of race, ethnic cultural variety living in one nation. We were malays, impregnated by the Spanish, the Sepoys (Rape of Manila by the British), the Dutch (dutch colony what now is in River Side Marikina), the Japanese (19th century colony of San Miguel, and the Japanese Occupation), and America. The same traits that make Filipinos so easy to get along with foreigners are the very traits that make Filipinos cultural versatile, and this is the lack of a strong dominant culture. Although, you can make ...

Why it was traffic yesterday

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/star/20090807/tph-roxas-boulevard-a-sea-litter-dpwh-ty-b9426e6.html the crap that happened yesterday :( Plans- will buy a Php200 bb shot gun. I should buy 2 kaya. Combine a friends old 255mm barrel, and my old 455mm barrel with a bracing element and epoxy. Have a narrow PVC pipe with tight foam support inside serve as a barrel protector and extender. Cheat the BB capacity of the shotgun

Writing and Hoping

The summary came out well. I've been sometime in between fear and growing confidence to write the Mahadlika story but I've gotten an chapter one summary down. Its down and I'm ironing out the motives, the structure and the words "between the lines" elements that comes with fairly complex interactions of the few characters. I'm more excited to work and start writing but I want to make sure that once I zone out, I have a plan of action and some redoubts to retreat too if I hit a stumbling block. Bottom line, I'm amateur with spelling and grammar problems and my real strength is Phil History and Story Telling from Gming. Character Drama is something I've been trying to observe in the stories I'm reading and realized how subtle and the economic use of words comes in creating the best impact (not the most) for a given situation. Looking at my original outline from 2 years ago, a lot has changed in how I've learned the plot can be best told with auth...

Psychologically unprepeard: Philippine Customs

I was prepared to lose $30 to the Philippine customs red tape and corruption. Then I realized the complexities of the problem as time moved on. The emotional toll was something I underestimated. I failed to realize that as I waited for the package, my anticipation reshaped my value of the product. I'm not just losing $30, I'm losing $30 x opportunity cost of doing something else about it. Controlling impulses to take the matter into my own hands and fix it is in self a depressing element. Then there is the resources it would take to collect my package, opportunity cost = [Day's Pay + [emotional turmoil = ((philippine corruption + the countries sad state of affairs) x the is no hope for change)] + Daily Cost of Living + Transportation] x risk of getting into an accident. Holly shit I they're shaking me down = to the whole cost (Including Fee)... Alleged Customs Breakdown Total Cost = VAT (Variable Cost) + Custom Duties (Variable Cost) + Impo...

My goverment again: Philippine Customs

Philippine Customs. The Philippine postal service has been constantly ridiculed because of the epidemic corruption and inefficiency. These days large companies that provide basic services that have sensitive information use their own "mail" service. The Postal Service, despite how vital its role for commerce and creating job opportunities is one that has one of the least credibility and thus, no one uses them to conduct serious commerce dependent deliveries. Today, i've just learned my G3 magazines is stuck at customs and I've heard the Horror stories of the processing OVER charge beyond the 10% customs and 12% vat to a bunch of miscelenous fees that go up to 50%! My luck with government services is terrible. I almost always get the most corrupt or the most incompetent people and I'm too impotent to do anything about it. All I can do is just have to throw money at the problem (sigh). People who talk about justice and rights, (like myself) have a lot to learn abou...

Reproductive Health Bill

To all those Filipinos who are out there go to http://www.rhbill.com / to sign the bill petition. know the bill and sign it the bill petition. For those on the fence, read the bill and read the comments. For those against it, try to see the other side of the matter and talk about it with someone who understands the bill. Another Sample of Corruption

Living with Corruption . I've been following the Philipine Airsoft Forums and found out that when I registered my gun and filed for a Permit to Transport they screwed with me to get me to pay more. This isn't the Nth instance I got screwed because of how I look and how I approach the situation. The most recent occurance of me being screwed was when I applied for a replacement license because I lost it having to keep going in and out of villages (which Pisses me off) as some villages don't accept regular IDs. The "Tactic" they did was give me an ambigous problem with my renewal which was forcing me to go all the way (1 hour away because of traffic + it was nearing lunch break) to push me to make a bribe. Learning to live with this is part of living in the Philippines. I don't have to like it, but thankfully I can afford to take time out of work to fix these problems. I'm just sorry for the poor honest sap these people take advantage off who don't have m...

Go where you are appreciated

I think Filipinos should consider moving to Sweden instead of trying to get into the united states. I bet very grateful and hospitable Filipino immigrants would counter balance the highly suspicious other immigrants . Filipinos have one advantage to being a "weak" culture (weak in the sense that we cannot influence non-filipinos about our culture and we take on other cultures quite easily) and being very hospitable. To think that a country might want us, who will give us a chance and we would be so happy to work with them, is a dream to many filipinos. I know its cold there but personally, I'd rather there than over here. The concept of nation is blurring in this information age, we are more connected than before and we should consider being people first: race and nation second. As a people, filipinos who are very industrious, hard working, innovative and productive should consider going to sweden and contribute to there. Think about it, sure this was your family's h...

House of Piggy

Daughters . I was studying (when I should be working) on the dynamics of succession and found something particularly interesting. While sons garauntee the name in a paternal succession typically, in a "House" daughters have just as much of a role in the line. This is because, the most competent son in Law may be better than grooming one's own son for succession. Normally the Male Head of the household will have a very strong say in the matter of male succession, but when women can see a way that their husbands become their instruments to power then they will be inclined to perpetuate the strategy for their daughters rise up as powerful as the emperor with the "right" man. Arranged marriages aren't a simple matter of "getting rid" of a daughter, instead it is about getting a competent son in law. Son in Laws are more controllable than one's own sons (simply because of the comfortable distance one is able to assess their abilities), and can offer...

No Reservations and My Family Lechon

Pigs of My Family . If I met Bourdain and I had to show him my philippines then he would be mostly dissapointed except for one thing: the lechon. Lechon is that one thing that strongly figures Filipino. One would wonder, what about Lola's food? Sorry, but it was lolo who was the cook of the family and it was he who had that very perfectionist temperment when it came to cooking. If Bourdain ate with my family and I was in Augusto's place I would take him to the Macapagal side and let my cousins Leonard and Raymond deliver the key strokes about Tagalog food. I just know my dad so well and can imagine him trying to talk to Bourdain and explain his ideas and dreams for Philppine cuisine. It would not be a bad thing, infact I bet they will find my dad funny in a goofy kind of way and quite endearing. What is Filipino Cuisine ? To me: It is Comfort and Adaptability. There is one tradition in cooking filipinos are strongly in favor of, and it is their Family and their Friends. Filipin...

Makati's Finest

This time I didn't do anything wrong and they still pulled me over. The makati traffic police, in my experience is still one of the most corrupt LAW bodies in the philippines. What Happened: I was turning left on the makati paseo/makati ave intersection from HV de la Costa when I got cut by a gold CRV. It was green when I passed through, yellow when I was in the middle and the GOLD CRV cut me and I got across by the time it was green. The police made no effort to stop the CRV, who was also crossing at RED with me, but pulled ME over just cause I was the honest guy who respected authority. WTF. Makati Traffic Police are the MOST CORRUPT! I fucking Lost my temper when they tried to weasle at me and I had EVERY thing right done. Our conversation included them asking me: Corrupt Police Officer : Why didn't you cut him then? Me : Because I was defensive driving (Stuff in my head I had to cut off: " Defensive driving! you know! How you are really supposed to DRIVE!".... and...

Things that can piss you off

Gen. Otis is such an ass . "...stumbled on it while I was researching. Knowing how many atrocities they committed on Indians, I don't think doing the same to Filipinos come with a second thought. Its not like we had a history of genocide. Otis is such a dick, wish I can go back in time with what i know in science, warfare and history and whip up some indios to kick their ass with masterful guerrilla warfare. Go mongolian on his ass." reading up on Concentration Camps in Marinduque during the Fil American War kinda makes my blood boil. I wish we were a little bit more "evil" that we had war mongers who could lead us to kick more ass. Don't expect a reformist to win you a way, expect the butcher to do his job better than the dabbler. Difference Between Geeks and Nerds .

What is the MRT Line 3 or LRT 3

MRT line 3 . I wonder when this line will be done and how great the corruption involved will be. I know from the news, the North Rail project. I wish this line would be done much sooner, it would certainly ease the traffic of passangers. The image is linked to the title.
