Game Design - Failure and Success Analysis.

I'm not bashing my countrymen, but...

If you compare Anito: defend the Land Enraged and Mount&Blade. Critic and Users Score Respectively: 5.6/6.4 vs 7.4/8.8. It is not just a difference of technology.

If you look at the premise of Anito and some of the psychology and stories behind its starting and compare it to Mount and Blade, there is a world of difference and so many similarities.

Both are their own country's strongest mark in the Computer Game industry, they both draw from their own "history" or the past for inspiration, and placed themselves in positions of great financial risk.

The key difference that I see is in the level of commitment to the Vision. Anito has a throw away plot, it didn't even take the time to get any of the key Philippine "pre-history" points (not just the details) right. It was trying to bet on the previous success of Diablo.

This to me is a heart-breaking revelation and reflection. Take Amargan and Ipek Yavuz strategy and actions to see the glaring difference of passion, patience, confidence, and personal integrity to one's vision.

Given the chance to study up about Amargan and Ipek Yavuz, you will notice that they took their time and their commitment given the duration is Inspiring. It took them 7 years to develop Mount and Blade. It was around the last 4 years was when they put down the money and their own resources to do the project themselves.

I won't explain any further because you can learn this if you research them on the web.

Being a filipino, this just illustrates the psychological barriers and pressures that prevents a Filipino company from giving that level of commitment necessary to succeed with its vision intact. The Philippines is filled with waring factions, the multi-media industry microcosmic representation of how divided we are.

I was made extremely aware of this when the 3d Filipino Forums suffered several falling outs, and we basically shot ourselves at a chance at being the 3d Animation Hub of the world. Particularly the controversy surrounding the 3d animated film Hoodwinked (2005).

Philippine history has too many examples of our self sabotage. Diego Silang was assassinated by one of his own men, The class discrimination towards Bonifacio leading to the fracturing of the Katipunan and Bonifacio's execution at the hands of the Magdalo, the assassination of Edilberto Evangelista and Antonio Luna at the hands of their own allies.

It is not all a sad bunch of story, there are still others who strive to innovate and unite. There are those who are our own Amargan and Ipek Yavuz who are still on the course and doing their best to change the way this country is shaping to.

hehehe... Still working on Mahadlika.
