Cynics and Secularists

Religolous . Watched the movie. It makes me think of how all religious books are meant for the religious. Why would somebody who is religious ever pick up God is Not Great, watch religolous, or an opposing religion's religious book.

Curiosity is said to be the devil's tool. Strangely in Opus Dei, we were supposed to attack other religions with a keen mind. Strangely that keen mind turned on its self is able to do just a good a job as in other religions.

I wonder and already know how my parents would react to listening to God is not Great or Religolous. They would call it "hubris". Strangely, "Hubris" is what all filipinos call what they don't particularly like without any justification.

That politician is "mayabang" (arrogant) etc... you hear this a lot in Philippine Culture. But, what one will relialize with some self searching is that, its all about a difference of Values. Strangely, a lot of Filipinos don't understand they feel that way and they are reacting at the threat to their values.

Filipinos of the well-off class tend to be pragmatic and doubtfull about the motives of everyone they don't personally know to be niggsardly. Strangely, they don't bring that keen blade of perception to why they do what they do or suffer through what they suffer. It is so easy to just hold on to pillars of the values they grew up on despite the reality they grew up in.

It is strange. So strange in fact that there are growing number of secularists or secular humanists that are becoming aware of the wrong things that WE are letting happen. Cause, you see Unlike Religion, secularists are divided because their Tenet is Doubt... because it IS a belief that guards oneself from Believing. (Talk about conflicted)

The thing is that, secularists have a lot in common with each other. We all stand for freedome and keeping Powers in Check. These things are the most Key tenets of a Non-religious movement. Tenets that protect generations to come from suffering the injustices we had seen through the long history of humanity.

It is now I realize that I should not just be content to live my life as I see fit given my christian-based values of empathy but also to make sure everyone has the right to BE secularist. One of the milestones of our time is the freedom NOT to be of a Religion and to respectfully abstain from it.

It is strange that Secularists can freely accept religous people and their beliefs but in turn be reviled by them. I have the feeling that eventually as time and history allows us to be more rational and empathic we will be pretty intollerant of Religions and the power it used to wield.

Self Doubting Religions. Interestingly, in the Movie, the Catholics are the most self-doubting and non-fundamentalist kind of christians there are. My wife says its pure statistics, in terms of it being the most common christian branch.

What I can say about one of my favorite historical personas. Emperor Petros Sabatios of the 6C century was a Theocracy. He made sure the emperor was the head of both state and faith. Reading God is not Great, you learn why is the TOP most of the religious heirarchy are Cynics. I believe the Byzantine Emperor who wife was a very influential Courtesan, a Policy maker and a mind of that of the Academy was in truth a Cynic.

In response to kathy's post. Why is the standard in keeping the Powers in check in matters of money, different in keeping in matters of Religion? Money can do a lot of damage... Religion, well...
