Anarchy of Families: State and Family in the Philippines
History has interesting stories. ...and they all echo to today. The stories in the book aren't new, we see them in the headlines and our experience living here in this environ. What is new is what insight you get when you connect then and now. and WHOA...
the Wild Wild west... was in the Philippines. It was called La Madre Le Los Ladrones "The Mother of Thieves". It was so violent the Americans had to declare martial law in the state. It had everything and more, with cattle wrestling, bandits turned Governors, villains, anti-heroes, and even magic (the tattoos and talismans). Even today, criminal Law Lawyers never prosper because of the violence of the region.
I'm trying to BI (bad influence) our GM to run it. Planning to make a more EVIL version of Justiniano Montano or just my version of it. I have a some serial killer dramatics planned and make him just as violent but MORE theatric. Like instead of direct violence some more subtle but more gruesome acts and a psyche that is dangerously infectious. A type of evil that grows and consumes.
Why an evil player character? Well because living and growing up here I've realized evil is really PART of living in the philippines. I'm not getting in its head, I'm hopping it has a weakness. If you look at current philippine politics, the most bad ass right now is PGMA (president Gloria macapagal-arroyo). All her enemies self destructed, she is resourceful , a great micro manager and creative (she even had planes start could seeding to prevent the rally). I have to say, evil works here and works very well and very hard.
I'm beginning to see that good or being good is not enough. Being good and clinging to religion is easy when life here is very depressingly poor. No one has the strength to fight because they are all too tired trying to make a living. In context POVERTY is the Philippines and the violent and cunning thrive in a people who are too tired and weak to protect themselves and their rights. An this perpetual Poverty makes it that only the unscrupulous/ the evil have the RIGHT to pursue happiness and any form they wish it to be.
Every grown person is left to their own discretion where the line of what is right and wrong falls. There are so many times things are justifiable and the end justifies the means because only an sheltered Blind Idiot will not see how very gray life can be. Especially an idiot with no Emotional Quotient. We often do what is right because we want fairness in return, but we should not be blind to the WORLD of reality where this belief does not exist to the men and women who hold the power.
We must understand that every time they commit their acts, they don't see it as evil. They don't feel anything about it and because they don't... they exist outside the sphere of Righteousness common people try to live in. Much like honor, righteousness belongs only to the righteous, those who exist outside the sphere of Righteousness don't deserve the same treatment as those within the sphere. They are beyond, what we who are law abiding. consider human or just thus we act on them the same way we act on a pest, on a virus, or a parasite. We act on them with out remorse, for there was no soul, no remorse, no regret, no human element there in the first place.
Philippines is like a Monster setting... you Play a Monster and fight other Monsters... and Justiniano is one of the Biggest monsters there is.
