Nothing to Report

Had my game. Doubt there will be a second one, but you never know. I'm glad they enjoyed and so did I. Its been a year plus since I last GMed and it was a painfull memory to look back on despite my own efforts. People are People, as i grow older I begin to understand more about the elements that are lost in youth. Second chances don't happen as rarely as one might hope, doing well on a second chance is more likely to fail when the pressure bears down on you.

I'm just glad people enjoyed, despite my obstacles. hosting without a maid is very hard, GMing and being the host is enough for me to think it may not be worth it. Thinking on your feet, answering the phone, remembering the notes, reacting quickly, reading your players, keeping from being overwhelmed, etc. etc. is all hard. Thats why I offer my services as GM assistant. Its a hard task, a little help makes the game better for everyone.

If I had to grade myself it would be a C-. Anyway, its been more than a year since I last played and despite my advertising and looking for open tables. Gaming is not a hobby you can do with strangers, here in the Philippines. Unlike abroad, where its easier to find tables open to strangers. There are some elements I should have picked up on. Foreshadowing and telling a story well is hard when people don't know you and as friends, laughter is out there to cut the build up your trying to achieve.

I can't help it, I have a lot to prove and not alot of opportunities for it.

Reading up on Conan. Robert E Howard and HP lovecraft got me thinking. If I were to play fantasy I'd play the Hyborean Age. Other fantasies fail for me. If your a history geek, conan I guess would be the best fantasy. It comes from a mind that has thought about doing historical fiction but didn't have the means to research it.

Robert E Howard is certainly well beyond his time. I can really see the Conan image clearly when I did my history research. There have been many "barbarian" emperors. The most conan-like being Emperor Zeno. A real barbarian, from mountain people called Isurians. Fierce and very aggressive, for a tribe of people, the romans considered them a threat and wisely put them down. They became a source of levied soldiers, who eventually grew into power as generals. Conan would be such a man, siting on the throne with his loyal generals, a warrior and a king. Surrounded by experts who helped him deal with affairs of the state as he campaigned against military threats.

Using the same intuition and cunning in the battle field, such a general would be equipped enough to handle matter of intrigue and deception.

Civ: Beyond The sword. Won for the 1st time and won cultural victory, the first. As they said Byzantium is a very multi talented civilization. Early game, I was a builder monopolizing many religions. With access to marble, I built many cultural establishments and was able to beat them to the two most important religions given my abilities: Pyramids and the Oracle. Eventually I was able to create a very strong economy, but it was pretty late and even with the powerful cataphrakts choosing to fight and expand against opponents who were more advanced technologically was a BIG gamble.

Although I made a decent counter espionage and espionage civ. With religion and Laws, I was able to steal tech often. especially when I became a pacifist +100% great people , had the national epic +100 again, and the parthenon +100% I had alot of great people. A good number of them spies. Instead of gonig for ealy medieval age, I chose Code of Laws to be the first to make specialist spies. That was cool. A REAL byzantine empire. With better spies, next time I will be more free to give away my tech, because I wouldn't be at that great of a loss when I can steal tech from asshole AIs who ask but don't give back.
