Armor Weights

A common misconception. Armor was not designed for body builders of herculean strength. Most armors would be comfortable to wear for the average policeman or soldier fit for standard duty. That is, the average full suit of armor with helmet, would be around 30lbs-40lbs. Unfortunately my GURPS pet peeve is that the armor weights were very poorly researched.

One particular is Limb Scale armor. Heavy limb scale armor did not come in sleeves or leggings. Scale armor, being rigid did not come in these forms, instead they cam in either skirts or wide shoulder guards which were more like small shields (like the ones the Japanese armor is known to have, its not exclusively a japanese armor accessory).

One of the most common limb armor is actually metal bands woven over a leather backing and stitched together.

Another pet peeve is that a full suit of heavy armor would weigh 110lbs. They got these weights from jousting armor. Sadly as any expert would tell you, jousting armor is for sport purposes not for war. Surviving Jousting armor (even museums will tell you) was made to prevent accidents in one of the most dangerous sports of that era and is no means a middle ages armor (it came around early renaissance).

Regular Thick Plate armor was around 45lbs WITH the arming doublet and leggings. The open faced Milanese helmet was 4-5 lbs. 50lbs, DND has more accurate armor weights :(

Lighter Plate weighs around 35lbs. 35 being around the IDEAL weight value a human can carry into battle. This value can be seen again and again because of human biometrics.

If one was to look closely, 30lbs + weapon, shield, gauntlets, boots and helm would be the load going into combat. Armorers would not leave this sweet spot because far less people can carry more of a load and be effective. 45lbs armor is usually made for the strongest, the exception, not the average.

45lb armor are for (in gurps term ST12+ is for those people who are in the 180lbs+ of mass

rant rant rant... etc.
